The Pacific Education Institute provides professional development for educators, formal and informal, to advance science literacy and deepen student engagement by empowering educators to teach real-world science outdoors. The information provided below is intended to supplement the PEI website, available fliers, and calendar dates on the PEI website. The information below is purely supplemental and, in the case of difference, the PEI website and/or PEI-specific information is ultimately the resource to which you should refer.
Supplemental information w/ Q & A
Question: How does the Implementation Stipend work? The stipend comes in a check sent out after PEI receives the implementation artifacts described in the Implementation Stipend document shared at the workshop -- usually 3-4 weeks after you receive notification from your regional or workshop coordinator the documents have been received and forwarded to PEI for processing. The goal here is to support attendees, new and returning, to take the step out into that awesome outdoor lab space available just outside the doors of the classroom, further is fine but not necessary.
Question: Love this workshop but I can’t attend this time. Will you do it again and how far in advance do you announce workshops? Workshops are generally announced 2-3 months ahead of the event. However, logistics involved in planning locations and/or securing funding may delay initial release of workshop dates. We also repeat workshops with strong attendance that show benefit to teachers and/or are requested by school districts. We love feedback and requests, so please feel welcome to share your thinking and requests. You may email Mike (contact info below) or you are welcome to use the contact dialog provided on this website.
Question: Why are some workshops on Saturdays? Sub availability and travel, especially for smaller districts registering teams for professional development, is the primary reason, but the additional work of writing sub plans is also a factor for attendees. We strive balance but are also open to input here as sub availability and teacher and/or administrator preference is our goal.
Question: Do you have more workshops planned for the region? Sure! … and more opportunities to plan, so let us know what you want to see new, what you want to see repeated, and what to explore in greater depth. We are excited to develop more workshops for teachers and administrators in the region. See the Pacific Education Institute website calendar for additional opportunities.
Question: Can you come to our school to work with our staff directly? Yes, we can schedule with your school/district for specific workshops.
Question: I’m excited to attend, and I’ve been to a workshop prior, but I didn’t take my class out afterward. I want to come again, but I’m wondering if I can get help if needed after the workshop? Absolutely! In fact that is part of all PEI workshops and the reason PEI maintains regional Coordinators. A complex but differentiating factor inherent to location and project-based learning implementations is variability. All locations are unique. School sites, parks, fields, forests, beaches are all different and may require a variety of approaches to your investigation or FieldSTEM® alignment. So, absolutely, it is integral for successful professional development that we are available for individual teachers, teams, PLCs, schools, districts, and community and industry partners.
Question: Do PEI workshops meet the STEM clock hour requirement? PEI workshops frequently include STEM clock hours. The requirement for certification renewal after September 2019 is 15 STEM clock hours for certain content area renewals. There are additional avenues to meet the requirement as well, including National Board Certification or Professional Growth Plans including STEM components. For more information on renewal requirements starting in September 2019 see Certification on the OSPI website here.
